“My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
John 14:2-3
Two other times in the New Testament do we hear the phrase “Father’s house.” First, we see Jesus when he was twelve say that he had to be in his “Father’s house,” as he stuck stayed in Jerusalem in the Temple (Luke 2:49). Second, in the Gospel of John we see Jesus again refer to the temple again as the “Father’s house” as he is clearing it of wickedness. He then goes on to refer to himself as that house that he will destroy and raise up in three days (John 2:16, 19).
As Jesus would go to the cross just hours after he uttered this statement to his disciples, he was making room for the whole world within Himself. The veil of his body was about to be shred to pieces, and as we stand under that sight, seeing the blood and water flow and Him, and Him speak words of forgiveness and grace, we too are slain and made new in Him. Jesus brings us into Himself and sets up home in us with the Father by the Holy Spirit (John 14:23).
In the resurrection he comes back and takes us to be with Him. He says, “Because I live, you also will live” (John 14:10). We are right now “seated in heavenly places with Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6). We have our place in Christ—the Father’s House. The hidden realm of heaven is inside us because God himself is inside us. So relax. Realize your residence in the Father’s house. Be grateful that God isn’t confined to some temple in Jerusalem, but rather exists in Christ and Christ exists in us!
