What a fantastic time we had together at our opening Sunday service!
Many people were very interested in how we addressed the topic of being non-denominational. Since that part of the sermon put forward who we are in a very succinct way, we thought it would be nice to share it with you here on this blog post…
“Some have asked what kind of church we are. In our new church bulletin it describes us as “non-denominational”. That simply means we are hard to fit in one mold or box of Christianity. It does not mean “anti-denominational”. We are not against Baptist, or Lutherans, or Presbyterians, or Methodists, or Catholics, or Orthodox, or Pentecostals. No. And while there are certain benefits from belonging to a denomination, there is also a certain kind of beauty to being a group on the margin that says, “Hey. I don’t know fully what I am. All I know is that I’m a Jesus freak. I need everything about Jesus that is emphasized everywhere. I need Orthodox mystery, Catholic beauty, Protestant audacity, Charismatic reality – I need it all! And what I really need is all the beauty of church doctrine, and history, wrapped up in a big fat GRACE burrito served with a nice load of homemade GRACE Guacamole on the side. I need the Father’s Fatted Calf that He freely gives to all his lost sons and daughters. I need JESUS.”
We are people excited about how the “invisible God” had become “visible” in Jesus Christ. We are excited that Jesus of Nazareth who was roaming the streets of Jerusalem 2,000 years ago, is present with us today in all of his suffering love and resurrection power. We are committed to really understand what it means for Jesus to be present with us and how that changes everything. Who’s in for the journey?
