The first ‘kingdom sermon’ Jesus preaches in Matthew is usually referred to as “the sermon on the mount.” Jesus ascends a mountain, sits down, and begins to speak with authority about the paradoxical Kingdom of God that He was bringing, and which had already begun to take root in His ministry. He opens His sermon by simply pronouncing blessings on all sorts of states in life that many do not consider blessed.
