In Genesis 17 God continues His covenantal relationship with Abram. First, He gives Abram a new identity. He will now be Abr-AH-am. God is actually breathing His own name into Abram’s name here! Second, God gives Abram the sign of the covenant (circumcision) and tells him that the Promised Seed will not come through Abram’s self effort. This was a tough pill to swallow, but would move Abraham’s covenantal relationship with God to another level.
